Transferring Brokerage in Ontario: How It Actually Works

Last updated 10 August 2026. Sourced to RECO’s own brokerage and agent guidance pages, accessed 10 August 2026. Where RECO publishes no rule, this page says so.

Quick answer

You do not file the transfer. Your new brokerage does. RECO’s process runs through the MyWeb portal and is completed by the receiving brokerage, using your registration number and the written termination notice from the brokerage you are leaving.

Three timing rules govern it: transfers must be processed within 60 days of the effective termination date; transfer dates cannot be backdated more than 30 days; and transfer dates cannot be post-dated.

The RECO fee is $25. There is no numbered form and no RECO-mandated notice period — that part is your contract, not the regulator.

What the receiving brokerage needs from you

RECO’s guidance to brokerages lists what has to be entered in MyWeb:

  • Your RECO registration number
  • The written termination notice, uploaded
  • Confirmation of who initiated the termination — you or the brokerage
  • The effective transfer date
  • The effective termination date, if not already processed
  • The date the termination notice was given

Once RECO completes it, both the brokerage and the agent receive an email confirmation.

The three timing rules, in RECO’s words

Rule What it means in practice
“Transfers must be processed within 60 days of the effective date of the termination” You cannot leave, sit unattached for months, and then transfer
Transfer dates cannot be “backdated more than 30 days from the current date” Retroactive tidying-up has a hard limit
“Transfer dates cannot be post-dated” You cannot line up a transfer to fire automatically on a future date
Three things people assume RECO requires, and it does not There is no published minimum notice period for leaving a brokerage — RECO wants a written termination notice and its date, nothing more. There is no numbered RECO transfer form; it is all MyWeb. And RECO does not publish anything about who pays what between brokerages. All three are contractual matters between you and your brokerage. Read your agreement before you hand in notice.

What it costs

RECO’s published fee schedule, effective 1 March 2023: transfer $25. For context, new salesperson registration is $356, renewal is $350, and reinstatement is $400 plus $44.

Your brokerage may charge its own fees on exit or entry. RECO does not set or publish those, and this page will not guess at them.

Keep your own obligations current through the move

A transfer does not pause anything else. Two things that catch people mid-move:

  • Insurance. RECO’s programme runs 1 September to 31 August, at $500 plus applicable taxes. RECO states that if payment is not received before 1 September, “your registration will be suspended, and you will not be eligible to trade.” The published 2026–27 deadline is 14 August 2026.
  • Contact details. RECO: “You must update this information within five days after you move or your contact information changes.”

Questions worth asking a brokerage before you move

Transfer mechanics are the easy part. The harder part is whether the move is the right one. Questions that get useful answers:

  1. What does the split look like at my actual production, not at the top tier?
  2. What am I charged monthly regardless of whether I close anything?
  3. Who owns the client data if I leave — and can I export it?
  4. What happens to a deal that is firm but not closed on my transfer date?
  5. Is lead provision real, and if so what is the source and the expected conversion?
  6. Who do I call at 9pm on a Sunday when a deal is falling apart?

Add your split structure, monthly costs, what support actually exists, and how you handle in-flight deals on a transfer. If you would rather not publish numbers, say so and I will reframe this section around a conversation instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I transfer to another brokerage in Ontario?

The receiving brokerage completes the transfer in RECO’s MyWeb portal, not you. They need your RECO registration number, the written termination notice from your current brokerage, confirmation of who initiated the termination, and the effective transfer date. RECO charges a $25 transfer fee.

How much does it cost to transfer brokerage in Ontario?

$25, per RECO’s published fee schedule effective 1 March 2023. That is the RECO fee only; your outgoing or incoming brokerage may have its own administrative charges, which RECO does not set or publish.

How long does a brokerage transfer take in Ontario?

RECO’s rules are about dates rather than duration: transfers must be processed within 60 days of the effective termination date, transfer dates cannot be backdated more than 30 days from the current date, and transfer dates cannot be post-dated. You and the agent both receive an email once RECO completes it.

How much notice do I have to give my brokerage in Ontario?

RECO does not publish a required notice period. What RECO requires is a written termination notice and the date it was given. Any minimum notice is a matter of your contract with your brokerage, not a RECO rule, so read your agreement.

Is there a RECO form for transferring brokerage?

No numbered paper form. The process runs entirely through RECO’s MyWeb portal and is completed by the receiving brokerage. RECO’s own guidance to agents is simply to have the new brokerage complete the transfer in MyWeb.

Do I lose my registration while transferring?

RECO’s published rules cover the timing of the transfer rather than any gap in registration. Because the rules restrict backdating and prohibit post-dating, the sequencing between your termination date and your transfer date matters. Confirm the specifics with RECO and with the incoming brokerage before you resign.
