Quick answer

The single most important thing on this page: Queensway Health Centre at 150 Sherway Drive does not have an emergency department. It has an urgent care centre, open daily from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Trillium Health Partners states its emergency departments are at Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital.

The nearest full emergency department is St. Joseph’s Health Centre at 30 The Queensway, open around the clock, every day, run by Unity Health Toronto.

People get this wrong, sometimes at three in the morning. It is worth knowing before you need it.

Healthcare

Facility Address What it actually is
St. Joseph’s Health Centre 30 The Queensway, Toronto M6R 1B5 Full emergency department, open 24 hours a day, every day. In the Barnicke Wing, just inside the emergency entrance. Operated by Unity Health Toronto. Emergency department phone 416-530-6003
Queensway Health Centre 150 Sherway Drive, Toronto M9C 1A5 Urgent care centre, not an emergency department. Trillium Health Partners states it is open daily 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and that registration may close earlier on high-volume days. On-site x-ray, ultrasound, CT and laboratory testing. No referral required. 416-259-6671
Check before you go

The urgent care centre at Queensway Health Centre has closed and reopened at least once, and its hours have changed. The hours above are what Trillium Health Partners published when I checked on the date at the top of this page. Check thp.ca before travelling, and in an emergency go to a full emergency department or call 911 rather than relying on an urgent care clinic’s hours.

A historical footnote that explains the confusion: Queensway General Hospital opened on 21 July 1956 with 131 beds. It was a full hospital, and long-time residents still think of the site that way. The service model changed; the local memory did not.

One thing to get right: there are two City facilities carrying the Gus Ryder name. Gus Ryder Pool and Health Club is the indoor facility at 1 Faustina Drive in Etobicoke. Sunnyside Gus Ryder Outdoor Pool is a separate outdoor pool at 1755 Lake Shore Blvd, in Parkdale. They are not the same place and they are not close to each other.

Schools

I am deliberately not ranking schools or characterising them, and I do not publish EQAO or Fraser Institute tables. Two reasons. First, Ontario human rights law and my regulator’s rules restrict how an agent may steer buyers using neighbourhood characteristics. Second, school catchment boundaries are set by the boards, they change, and the only reliable way to know which school serves a specific address is to check that address on the board’s own school finder. Any agent who tells you a condo “is in the catchment for” a named school without checking that address is guessing.

Schools located in or adjacent to the corridor, from the City’s school locations dataset, include Norseman Junior Middle (105 Norseman St), Castlebar Junior (70 Chartwell Rd), Park Lawn Junior Middle (71 Ballacaine Dr — note the address is Ballacaine, not Park Lawn Road), Sunnylea Junior (35 Glenroy Ave), Karen Kain School of the Arts (60 Berl Ave), John English Junior Middle (95 Mimico Ave), Etobicoke Collegiate Institute (86 Montgomery Rd), Etobicoke School of the Arts (675 Royal York Rd) and Lakeshore Collegiate Institute (350 Kipling Ave); and in the Toronto Catholic board, Holy Angels (65 Jutland Rd), St Louis (11 Morgan Ave), St Mark (45 Cloverhill Rd), Our Lady of Sorrows (32 Montgomery Rd) and Bishop Allen Academy (721 Royal York Rd).

Two specialty programmes I was able to verify from the schools’ own pages: John English Junior Middle offers Core French, Early French Immersion and Junior Extended French; and Bishop Allen Academy lists Advanced Placement, French Immersion and Enriched French, and Specialist High Skills Major programmes. Check anything else directly with the board.

Moving here with a family, or moving here alone?

Either way, the practical questions are the ones that matter: where the pool is, which library has the meeting room, how far the real emergency department is. Ask me. I use these places, and I will give you the unvarnished version rather than the brochure version.

Condo Valuation

What’s your condo
worth today?

Three quick steps. Condos don’t price like houses — your floor, your view, and whether you own parking move the number more than anything else. This weighs all of them.

Two units, same floor plan,

That happens constantly in condos — one has the parking, the right exposure, or a board that keeps the reserve fund healthy. A model can’t see your status certificate. I can.

How this works — your estimate comes from a model built on recent Toronto & GTA condo sale data, weighting area, size, layout, floor, exposure, view, parking, locker, age and condition. It is an automated estimate for information only — not an appraisal and not a Comparative Market Analysis. Condo values also depend on the building’s reserve fund, maintenance fees, recent special assessments and status certificate, none of which a model can read. Ask me for a written CMA before you make a decision.

About the author — Jatin Dua, Etobicoke real estate agent

I’m a licensed Realtor with RE/MAX Quantum Realty at 799 The Queensway in Etobicoke. My office is on this street, which is the only reason I can write pages like this one: I walk past these sites, I read the City files, and I check the numbers against the source rather than repeating what a marketing page says. I work with buyers, sellers and investors across Stonegate–Queensway, Mimico, Humber Bay Shores, New Toronto, Long Branch and Alderwood.

Questions about a specific suite or a specific site? connect@jatindua.com or 437-987-1925.

Please read this. This page is general information for Ontario residents, not legal, tax, financial or investment advice, and it is not a substitute for a lawyer’s review of a status certificate or an accountant’s review of your numbers. Building, planning and market figures are drawn from the public sources listed above on the date shown and can change without notice; where those sources disagree with each other, I have said so rather than quietly picking a number. Development applications described here are proposals or approvals, not guarantees that anything will be built, and approved projects change. Always verify unit-specific facts — fees, parking, locker, exclusive-use areas, rules and any special assessment — against the condominium corporation’s own documents before you commit. Not intended to solicit buyers or sellers currently under contract with another brokerage. E. & O.E.
