The street also carries something most Torontonians have driven past a thousand times without registering: the Ontario Food Terminal at 165 The Queensway, a 40-acre wholesale produce market that moves 2.1 billion pounds of produce a year.

The Ontario Food Terminal is the most interesting thing on this street
Almost nobody who lives here has been inside it, because it is wholesale only. But it is worth understanding, because it explains the corridor.
The Food Terminal opened in 1954 on land that had been market gardens — small plots of one to twenty hectares supplying Toronto. An informal farmers’ market had operated at Park Lawn Road and The Queensway since 1915, on essentially the same spot. The Board states the Terminal ranks among the top four terminal markets in Canada and the United States by volume of produce distributed.
That history is why The Queensway is an employment corridor rather than a residential one, and why the development fights on this street keep coming back to employment land. The City describes the South Etobicoke Area of Employment as the second-largest concentration of employment-designated land in Toronto, supporting over 44,000 jobs.
Where the name comes from
This road was originally Queen Street West. In 1941, Etobicoke Township renamed the section within its borders “The Queensway”, at the suggestion of Councillor Horace H. Smith, after Queen Street had broken into disconnected segments and the naming had become confusing.
A few other dates worth knowing about the street you are considering living on:
- 1912 — Queensway Public School opens.
- 1934 — the street is extended west to Highway 27, now the 427.
- 1950s — the Roncesvalles-to-Humber River section is built alongside the Gardiner at a cost of $4.9 million, requiring the purchase of 7.3 hectares of High Park.
- 20 July 1957 — the streetcar right-of-way opens, connecting to the relocated Humber Loop. This is why the streetcar still stops at Humber Loop and goes no further west.
- 1962 — the geodesic dome is built at the Church on the Queensway; the current building opens in 1985.
- 1970s — the road is extended into Mississauga across Etobicoke Creek.
My read
Be clear-eyed about what kind of retail this is. The Queensway gives you extraordinary access to big-box and destination shopping — genuinely better than most of the city — and comparatively little of the walkable main-street kind. There is no high street here. There is a very good road with very good shops on it.
That is changing slowly as the mid-rises fill in ground-floor retail, and the 1025 masterplan’s three new public streets would change it substantially. But buy the street as it is: a driveable corridor with excellent errands and a growing number of coffee shops, not a walkable village.
What I could not confirm
For completeness, because I would rather tell you what I do not know: I could not verify Sherway Gardens’ current square footage or store count from the owner (only the 1971 opening figures are sourced), and I could not confirm the number of screens at Cineplex Queensway from Cineplex itself, so neither figure appears above.
