Milton and Halton Hills (Georgetown and Acton) are the most affordable corners of Halton Region, each with a hospital and GO trains. In August 2026 the median detached home sold for $1,130,000 in Milton and $990,000 in Halton Hills. Milton’s 2026 total tax rate is 0.863509% of assessed value; Halton Hills’ latest verified rate is 0.955498% (urban, 2025). Halton lets owners 65 and older with household income under $69,500 defer their whole tax bill. Be clear-eyed, though: only 9.9% of Milton residents were 65 or older in 2021, the lowest share in Halton. It is a young, family-heavy town. Halton Hills, at 15.1%, is closer to average.
Milton and Halton Hills at a glance
Milton sits at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment along Highway 401; Halton Hills, to the north, takes in Georgetown, Acton and rural hamlets. People retiring in Milton, Ontario tend to be long-time residents or grandparents moving near children. For the whole-GTA comparison, see my GTA retirement comparison.

What homes cost, by type
TRREB figures for one month, August 2026. Several categories are small or tiny samples; treat them as rough only.
| Home type (Aug 2026) | Milton: sales / median | Halton Hills: sales / median |
|---|---|---|
| Detached | 59 / $1,130,000 | 41 / $990,000 |
| Semi-detached | 7 / $925,000 (tiny) | not reported |
| Freehold townhouse | 37 / $810,000 | not reported |
| Condo townhouse | 5 / $610,000 (tiny) | 7 / $588,000 (tiny) |
| Condo apartment | 14 / $505,000 (small) | 4 / $575,000 (tiny) |
| All home types | 122 / $900,000 | 53 / $835,000 |
Milton’s freehold townhouses are the one category beyond detached with a real sample: 37 sales at $810,000. Many have two or three storeys, so check the stairs. Condo apartments are scarce in both towns; be ready to watch for months, or widen the search to Oakville.
Property tax and Halton’s seniors’ deferral
Rates apply to your MPAC assessed value, not the market price.
- Milton, 2026: 0.863509% for an urban home (town 0.379288%, Halton Region 0.331302%, education 0.153000%). As simple arithmetic, a $500,000 assessment pays about $4,318.
- Halton Hills: the 2026 rate was not posted in our sources. The 2025 rates were 0.955498% urban and 0.951964% rural.
Halton’s Older Adults Property Tax Deferral is one of the more generous programs in the GTA, because it defers the whole annual bill, interest-free:
- Age 65 or older, combined gross household income under $69,500.
- A registered owner has lived there as a principal residence for the last four years; taxes paid; no other Halton property.
- A one-time $200 fee is added; apply or renew by 30 September; repaid on sale, transfer or probate.
Milton also lists a deferral of tax increases for low-income seniors, applied for at Town Hall; a Halton Hills town rebate is not published in our sources. A deferral reduces what your estate receives, so discuss it with family and your accountant.
The province adds the Ontario Senior Homeowners’ Property Tax Grant: up to $500 a year for owners 64 or older, in full for a single person with income up to $35,000 (a couple, $45,000), phasing out at $50,000 ($60,000). It is claimed with your tax return, so ask your accountant.
Getting around: Milton Transit, ActiVan and GO
Milton Transit senior fares: $4.25 cash, $2.55 e-ticket in the Token Transit app, $26 for 10 rides or $62 a month; no PRESTO fare is listed. Milton has offered free senior rides on Wednesdays in June, and its Seniors Month page repeats the offer without a year, so check first. Milton access+ is the specialized service.
Halton Hills has limited buses: Route 21 runs along Steeles Avenue between Milton GO and Lisgar GO on weekdays and Saturdays, $4.25 cash. The town’s ActiVan serves people with disabilities and seniors 65 or older, with registration.
GO’s Milton line serves Milton, and the Kitchener line stops in Georgetown and Acton; seniors save 55% with the Seniors fare type. With higher local fares, the Ontario Seniors’ Public Transit Tax Credit helps: up to $450 a year back on $3,000 of transit costs for those 65 and older (2025 tax forms).
Healthcare
Halton Healthcare runs Milton District Hospital and Georgetown Hospital, along with Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. A community hospital in town is a real advantage for regular appointments. My retirement home vs long-term care guide covers the next stage.
Daily life
The landscape is the draw: the Niagara Escarpment rises along Milton’s west side, the Credit River runs through Georgetown, and Acton is a smaller town to the north-west, with farmland between. Milton has grown fast into a town of newer subdivisions and young families; Halton Hills is quieter. Outside the older downtowns, daily life depends on a car, or on ActiVan and Milton access+ once driving stops.
Who they suit, and who they don’t
I want to be honest about Milton. Only 9.9% of residents were 65 or older in 2021, the lowest in Halton, against 21.0% in Burlington and 16.0% across Halton Region. That is wonderful if your grandchildren are there, less so if you want neighbours your own age. Halton Hills, at 15.1%, is closer to the regional average.
They suit you if your family is here, you want Halton’s deferral at a lower house price than Oakville, or you love the countryside and want a small town with a hospital. They suit you less well if you plan to stop driving soon or want an older community around you. See retiring in Burlington for that, or retiring in Brampton, where resident seniors ride transit free.
The money: what a downsize frees up
Median to median, one month of TRREB data, before commission, legal fees, land transfer tax and moving. Illustrative only.
| Illustrative move (Aug 2026 medians) | Sell | Buy | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milton detached to Milton freehold townhouse | $1,130,000 | $810,000 | $320,000 |
| Milton detached to Milton condo apartment (14 sales) | $1,130,000 | $505,000 | $625,000 |
| Halton Hills detached to Milton condo apartment (14 sales) | $990,000 | $505,000 | $485,000 |
A townhouse keeps you freehold but frees less; a condo frees more but adds a monthly fee. Try your own figures in the downsizing money planner below, and see my Milton home values page.
